Gecko and the Echo

Meet Goldy – The Gecko with Big Dreams!

Book Mama Reviews cover Rachel Bright & Jim Field's Gecko and the Echo

Let's talk about a book that's made its way to the top of our must-read list, and one of our favourite read-aloud books too. It's called "The Gecko and the Echo", and it's a real gem.

You may know how kids (and even adults) can get caught up in the idea of being popular. The lights, the applause, the adoration – it’s intoxicating. Now, imagine that world from the point of view of a tiny gecko named Goldy - who dreams of being a superstar. That’s the journey we embark on in The Gecko and the Echo, a dazzling story from the talented creators of The Lion Inside.

We’ll take a closer look at this flamboyant tale of fame, friendship, and the echoes of kindness that ripple through our world. It’s a perfect read for parents and children alike, and I’ll share why this story might just become a favourite bedtime pick in your home too.

A Star is Born… or So She Thinks

Goldy is "that" gecko. You know the one – the charismatic, larger-than-life, centre-of-attention lizard who lives for the spotlight. Goldy has a single goal in life: to be a "STAR". And, oh, does she give it her all! From the first page, we are whisked away to her tropical island, where every day, from morning till night, it’s all about "The Goldy Show". With her grand performances full of glitz and glamour, she’d sing songs out of tune and very loudly. Goldy dreams of stardom, and in this sunny paradise, she is the star, at least in her own eyes.

Yet, as we follow her through one performance after another, the story’s humour and charm reveal a deeper truth: When you're so busy focusing on yourself in the limelight, you often miss how your actions affect others around you. Goldy soon learns a tough lesson. When her big performance flops, Goldy's bubble of fame bursts and she experiences a dramatic fall from grace. But this is where the magic of the story truly shines.

It’s a message that resonates beautifully in today’s world, where it’s easy to become consumed by “likes,” followers, and the want to be popular. Goldy’s story serves as a gentle reminder for our little ones (and even for grown-ups) that kindness and connection are what truly shine the brightest… and when we treat others with kindness and love, that love comes echoing back to us, just like the echo Goldy hears.

Goldy’s moment of realization, when her "performance" starts to unravel, is a perfect jumping-off point for conversations with little ones about kindness, humility, and what it means to be a good friend.

Rhyming Fun with a Tropical Twist

If you love stories that rhyme and make you smile, then The Gecko and the Echo is a perfect fit. Rachel Bright’s playful rhymes and whimsical wordplay, paired with Jim Field’s vibrantly, expressive illustrations bring Goldy’s dramatic flair to life. It's like a fun adventure, full of rhymes and rhythm that will make you and your child want to read it again and again. Plus, it's a great way to help your child learn new words. But there's more to this book than just fun. It strikes a deeper chord about self-awareness and empathy.

Why Parents (and Kids) Will Love It

What sets The Gecko and the Echo apart is its ability to balance humour with heart. This book isn’t just for your little ones—it’s for you too!

As a literacy expert, I can’t emphasize enough how well-crafted rhyming stories like this one can boost your child’s language development. It helps them learn new words and become better readers. The rhythmic structure, repetition, and rich vocabulary in The Gecko and the Echo can also help children develop empathy and understanding while also building confidence in early readers. As Goldy learns to be more considerate of others, children can reflect on their own behaviour and learn to be better friends.

One of the standout lines in the story, “Yes Goldy found out what true greatness can be, not just for one but for you and me. Whatever our journey, whichever our track, what we send out will come echoing back.” beautifully illustrates the book’s theme of empathy and awareness. It’s a great example of how the language isn’t just fun but also teaches important life lessons. This combination of mindful storytelling and playful rhyme makes _The Gecko and the Echo_ a perfect read-aloud that’s both entertaining and educational for the whole family.

This story invites us to reflect on some important themes that make for wonderful chats with your little one.

1. What do you think Goldy learned by the end of the story?

This is a great way to gauge your child’s understanding of the story's message. Ask them to think about how Goldy's attitude changed from the beginning to the end.

2. Why do you think Goldy wanted to be a star so much?

Talk about the different reasons people want attention. Is it because they want to be loved, or because they think fame will make them happy? Does it always work that way?

3. What does "the echo" in the title refer to?

Help them see the metaphor of how Goldy's actions echoed back to her, not just in sound but in the way love and kindness returned to her through friendship.

4. Can you think of a time when helping a friend or being kind made you feel happy? Encourage your child to share personal stories where they’ve practised kindness or felt the joy of giving, helping them connect their experiences with the lesson Goldy learns in the book.

5. If you could ask Goldy one question, what would it be?

This fun and creative question allows your child to engage directly with the character and imagine further possibilities for Goldy's adventures.

6. Ask your child if they’ve ever felt like they were so focused on something that they forgot about the people around them.
