Talk Like A Pirate Day Celebrated with the Pirates In Pyjamas!

Book Review cover Pirates in Pyjamas

Ahoy, mateys! If you're looking for a bedtime story that's guaranteed to swab the deck clean of bedtime blues, then shiver me timbers, "Pirates in Pyjamas" by Caroline Crowe is a treasure you won't want to miss!

This playful picture book takes a hilarious dive into the world of pirates – but not the kind you might expect. Forget the gruff cutlasses and grumpy demeanour! Captain Grotbeard and his crew are a swashbuckling bunch who love nothing more than… well, getting ready for bed!

The story follows these not-so-scary pirates through their unique bedtime routine. From sculpting their hair into shark fins during bubble baths to dance parties in outrageous pyjamas - we’re talking polka dots, stripes, and even ones with footies! Crowe's rhyming text is full of playful language that will have your little buccaneers in stitches.

Why it's a Perfect Pick for Your Crew

  • Plunderin’ be fun! The rhyming text is catchy and easy to follow along with, making it a great book for parents and children to read together.

  • Arrr, So Engaging! The vibrant illustrations by Tom Knight add to the story's charm and humour. The artwork really captures the playful chaos on each page and will keep your child engaged and spark their imagination. We especially loved the detail of the curly, whirly straws for drinking their milk before bed and Sneaky Petes has a straw in everyone's cup.

  • Swashbuckling Silliness: Forget walking the plank! The story's humour is spot-on for young children. The unexpected twist on pirates and their love for cozy PJs is sure to bring on the giggles plus this crew settles their disagreements with pillow fights and tickle attacks. It's a refreshing twist that emphasises the fun and silliness of bedtime.

  • Reassuring Message: While the focus is firmly on fun, there's a gentle undercurrent of bedtime routines woven throughout. Plus there's a comforting message. Even the silliest pirates need their sleep! It subtly reinforces bedtime routines for little ones who might resist them.

Why we loved reading it:

From a parent’s perspective, I loved how "Pirates in Pyjamas" took a familiar routine (bedtime) and made it exciting and adventurous. It sparked my little one's imagination and made bedtime a playful adventure. The positive message about the importance of sleep is always a win! It also celebrates individuality, encouraging kids to embrace their own quirks and personalities, just like the wacky pirate crew. This story always makes it to the top of the bedtime story stack with my little ones, plus the catchy rhymes made it easy for them to join in on the storytelling fun – a sneaky way to encourage pre-reading skills!

Now it's time to set sail on your own high seas adventure with some fun discussion questions to spark conversation after reading "Pirates in Pyjamas":

  • If you could design your own pirate pyjamas, what would they look like?

  • If you could have a pirate pillow fight with anyone, who would it be? (Stuffed animals are welcome!)

  • What kind of silly pirate adventures do you think they dream about?"

"Pirates in Pyjamas" is a guaranteed treasure for bedtime story time. So, climb aboard the snuggle ship, raise the "lights out" flag, and get ready for a rollicking good adventure with your little pirates!
